Outdoor Living Design Tips for Small Spaces

When you have limited outdoor space, it becomes challenging to try and figure out what you can do to make it a comfortable place for you to relax and entertain. Here are some design ideas that will let you make the most of this opportunity.

Build a Deck or Patio

When you have a small outdoor space, keeping a lawn may not make much sense. It can be impractical. Building a deck or patio will allow you to make a more suitable surface on which you can place furniture and even walk around barefoot. You can choose different surfaces like wood, concrete, tile, or paving stones. Ensure that you provide a means for water to drain as it is still an exposed area where rainfall and snow will land.

Create a Vertical or Overhanging Garden

Having limited ground space does not mean you should entirely give up on greenery. Vertical gardens are a great solution when you have a small space. You can hang potted plants, flowers, and herbs on the wall, leaving more room to bring in furniture. You can also install rods or planks overhead from which you can again hang pots and baskets. Adding greenery will make the space comfier yet refreshing.

Create Storage Space

Even in small outdoor areas, you will find that Arrow storage space will come in very handy. A narrow cabinet or a deck box is an excellent way to ensure room for gardening tools, fertilizer for your plants, cushions for your patio furniture, and much more. Some can also serve as furniture like an outdoor table or seating area when a cushion is placed on top. This dual functionality can be beneficial when entertaining.

Add an Outdoor Rug

It becomes very cozy when you can retreat to a private area, kick off your shoes, lay back, and relax with a good book. Having an outdoor rug makes it more comfortable to do just that as you do not have to worry about stepping on the cold ground underneath. An outdoor rug will instantly add a feel of comfort and even protect the floor from damage caused by scraping furniture legs. If the floor is already damaged, an outdoor rug will help hide this blemish.

Use Minimalist Seating

You can use storage furniture as seating if it is at the right level by just adding some cushions. You can even find furniture explicitly built to serve as seating and storage. If this is too bulky, you can give your outdoor space a more spacious feel with smaller-sized seats like a bistro table with foldable chairs. Shop around for styles you like that will not take up much space and allow you to retain an airier feel to your outdoor space.

Take it Slow

Since you are working with a small space, the last thing you want is to make it cluttered. Do not write out a long list of items you will shop for to fill it. Start with just the basics, like a couple of chairs, a table, and a few potted plants. Once you have that in place, you will better understand what space you have left and what size of items you can add without going overboard.
